This statue, which honours one of Canada's most famous poets, was unveiled in May, 2008. Al Purdy died in 2000 at the age of 81.
The statue is 3 metres tall and cast in black bronze. It is oriented so that poet is facing south and sitting on two rocks, bringng the statue closer to ground level than if on a pedestal.
Its creation was a joint project between the City of Toronto, the Friends of the Poet Laureate and the Toronto Legacy Project. Work on the statue began in 2001, but took several years to be fully approved.
The statue was the second full-length statue of a poet in Toronto (the first being of Robbie Burns).
