This building was originally built as a low rise structure, opening in 1903. An eighteen storey addition was built to the east of the original building in 1920. This property’s contribution lies in its status as a city-wide landmark, its Edwardian architecture and high quality architectural detailing and its prominent siting on the corner of King Street East and Victoria Street, at the foot of Toronto Street and on the original Court House Reserve of the Town of York. The property also contributes to the historic value of the District through its historic and ongoing association with the King Edward Hotel, and its historic associations with George Gooderham and architect E.J. Lennox.
