Scarborough's first fire station, Birchmount Fire Hall, opened in 1925 and served the Birch Cliff community until the borough amalgamated with the City of Toronto in 1998, at which point the building became home to the Scarborough Firefighters Retirees' Club Museum. The service originally provided first aid as well as putting out fires, as this was before the advent of ambulance services in the area. The hall's Belvedere-like tower would have been used to dry canvas hoses after use to minimize deterioration from mould. Birchmount Fire Hall was designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act in 1981.
