The R. Laidlaw Lumber Company was founded in 1886 by the father of R.A. and Walter C. Laidlaw. In 1949, Mr. Robert A. Laidlaw established the Laidlaw Foundation to benefit charitable, educational, conservation and cultural organizations in Ontario. The Lumber Company was dissolved in 1972.

This building was given a "Mention" by the Massey Medals for Architecture in 1958.
