OTHER IDENTIFICATION
Alternate Name:
North Toronto High School; 17 Broadway Avenue

The building was demolished and replaced with a new school and two condominiums.

The school was conceived as a continuation school of the Town of North Toronto.

1909-10: The first class, consisting of 5 students, met in a room on the second floor of old Town Hall of North Toronto (Northwest corner of Yonge Street and Montgomery Avenue). As the number of students grew, the school expanded to an additional 3 rooms.

1912: Approval given to allocate $50 000 for a new school ($28000 of this allotted to buy land). The school was constructed at a cost of $33 344. The cornerstone was laid on December 2. A few weeks later, the Town of North Toronto was annexed to the City of Toronto.

1913: Building first occupied. This original building consisted of 5 classrooms and was designed in the Collegiate Gothic Style by Page & Warrington.

1915: 4 classrooms added and the heating system improved.

1921: Further additions with 10 classrooms, almost doubled the size of the school. Wooden stairs and walks were replaced with concrete and steel. The design of this addition was led by Board of Education architect C.H. Bishop. It also followed the Collegiate Gothic Style.

1927: Five portables in use to house the increasing student population.

1928: Name changed from North Toronto High School to North Toronto Collegiate Institute.

1929-30: A third storey with 10 classrooms was added to the building, designed by Board of Education architect Cyril E. Dyson. The style of the original building and additions was adhered to.

1956: To the west of the main building, a building containing an auditorium, 8 classrooms, and a cafeteria was built. To the east of the main building, a new wing with 3 classrooms was built. In the main building, a pool was added and the old auditorium was transformed into a gymnasium. This project was built at a cost of $645 000. This addition was designed by the firm Gordon S. Adamson, in a contemporary style which contrasted with the Collegiate Gothic style of the original.

1966: Science and library wing built, costing over $1 million. Designed by Bregman & Hamann in the Brutalist style.

1971: School address changed from 17 Broadway Avenue to 70 Roehampton Avenue. As a result, the previous back door now became the front door.

2003: The Toronto District School Board announced a new $34 million building would replace the original NTCI. The original building was becoming rundown, with plaster falling from ceilings and asbestos in the basement. The new building was set to open in 2006, but was delayed.

2007: The math wing was demolished. Two portables were added to accommodate for this lost space. The same year, construction finally began on the new building.

2011: The building was demolished after the completion of the new building.
