Notes:
The Eaton Centre is Toronto's most popular tourist attraction. Planning for a major downtown shopping centre anchored by the T. Eaton Co. Department store began in the 1960's, and several proposals were made. Some of these were controversial as they would have resulted in the destruction of Toronto's Old City Hall and other historical structures. Though the old Eaton store and many nearby factories and warehouse buildings were in fact demolished for this new centre, the most significant historical buildings were accommodated.
The Eaton Centre opened in two phases, the norther section on February 10, 1977 and the southern section on August 8, 1978. In addition to the mall, it also consists of three major office towers. Subsequent additions were opened in 1990 and 1999.
The flagship department store Eaton's closed, and has has been replaced with a Sears.
The complex won a Governor General's Medal for Architecture in 1982, and an Ontario Association of Architects Landmark Award in 2008.
