built in 1867 for builder Benjamin Langley, his wife Julia Ann and son Henry.
On the outskirts of town, it was thought that Riverdale’s bucolic setting could cure disease - unfortunately, Julia Ann soon came down with tuberculosis after moving in, and died in 1870. While not confirmed, it’s possible she contracted the disease through exposure at the House of Refuge, a shelter for widows and destitute women across the street from her home.
Benjamin continued to live in the home for 40 years, remarrying Hannah Smith and raising a family here. In 1875 the House of Refuge expanded to include an isolation hospital, and is the predecessor to Bridgepoint Health, still on-site today.
