In 2007, the Bata Shoes Head Office was demolished to make space for the construction of the museum. The Aga Khan Museum opened in September 2014 as a museum of Islamic civilizations and cultures. Light was a major inspiration for the design of the museum, especially different reflecting properties depending on the time of day and season. The exterior is white Brazilian granite. While following a contemporary design, there are some historical elements from Islamic cultures incorporated. The museum shares a 6.8 hectare site- the Aga Khan Park- with the Ismaili Centre Toronto. The museum itself is 129,167 square feet.
