This building was demolished for new plans for Bridgepoint Hospital, 2014.
The demolished Modernist Riverdale Hospital looked more like a resort than a healthcare facility. Built in 1963 by Howard Chapman and Len Hurst, the design incorporated many biophilic attributes that we now understand can contribute to restoration and healing in the patient environment. The curved semi-circular structure maximized patients’ views of Riverdale Park and the Don Valley. The rooms employed wood and brick finishes to provide warmth and comfort, with brick colours and playful forms to spark joy.
The original site of the Riverdale Hospital, now Bridgepoint Health, played an important role as caring for patients with contagious diseases in the 1870s. By 1957, the threat of epidemics was no longer as serious as it had been and the hospital’s mandate expanded.
