BUILDING INFORMATION
Name & Location:
John Farr House
905 Queen Street West
Toronto
West Queen West
Year Completed:
1847
OTHER IDENTIFICATION
Notes:

In 1820, Hertfordshire, England-born John Farr established York's second brewery on the south side of Lot Street (since renamed Queen Street), just west of Walnut Avenue. It stood on the west bank of Garrison Creek, a now obscured and infilled waterway that flowed into Lake Ontario beside Fort York garrison. The hollows at Trinity Bellwoods Park and Christie Pits are remnants of its course.

While the brewery itself was demolished in 1893 to make way for the commercial buildings that now stand in its place, the Georgian residence Farr built two lots west of it in 1847 miraculously survives in outstanding condition. The house's quintessential fan transom-bearing entrance has been replaced with a newer classical alternative, but the rest of the windows appear to be original.
