145 Front Street East
Toronto
St Lawrence-East Bayfront-The Islands
Alternate Name:
J. & J. Taylor Toronto Safeworks / Toronto Safe Works
Notes:
This building was originally built 1867 for the William Davies Pork Packing plant, and originally had only two storeys. It was taken over in 1871 by J. & J. Taylor Toronto Safeworks. It was significantly rebuilt after fire in 1883, and had additions in 1890. This building has been incorporated into 145 Front Street East, but they are treated as two buildings in the Inventory of Heritage Properties and in this database. The portion to the west was added in 1907. This property’s contribution lies in its historic role in the
industrialization of the District in the late 19th century. The structure
also contributes to the physical character of the District through its
uniform elevation with repetitive windows and bays, large building
footprint and polychrome brickwork, attributes which characterize
industrial buildings in the District.
