OTHER IDENTIFICATION
Alternate Name:
Trinity Street School, Trinity Church Sunday School
Notes:

The Enoch Turner Schoolhouse, Toronto's oldest surviving school building and its first free school, is located on Trinity Street between King Street East and Eastern Avenue. (There was previously a free school in the Town of York: the Common School, which was later renamed Upper Canada Central School, was a free school built at Jarvis and Newgate (now Adelaide) Streets in 1817 and closed in 1844.) It sits directly south of Little Trinity Church, Toronto's oldest surviving church building. The English architect Henry Bowyer Lane likely designed both Gothic Revival buildings in the 1840s. The school is named for the wealthy brewer and educational enthusiast who helped fund the University of Toronto's original endowment and established this free school for the children of local immigrants from Cork, Ireland, who gave the neighbourhood its current name: Corktown.
