The First Russian Congregation was founded in 1912 by Orthodox Jewish immigrants from the Kiever Gubernia, and originally began meeting in 'The Ward'. By 1917 the congregation had relocated to a house on the current site, and later purchased an adjacent home in 1921. The homes were eventually demolished, and a new synagogue was completed in 1927; designed by architect Benjamin Swartz. During the 1970s, a fundraising campaign began to restore the historic synagogue, which was at risk due to water and termite damage. Architect Martin Mendelow was commissioned to restore the synagogue; the restoration commenced in 1981 and was completed by the mid 1980s.
