336, 338 and 340 Jarvis were originally part of an 8-unit row house constructed between 1854 and 1872 by John and Mary Ann Gardner. 336 and 338 were built as a pair of semi-detached houses in 1854 and 340 was erected in 1861. Historical architectural drawings and photographs indicate that all houses were built in the Georgian Revival style as seen at 336 Jarvis.
Artist F. Bell Smith lived here from 1890 until his death in 1923.
