This building is a National Historic Site owned by the Ontario Ministry of Culture. Opened in 1914 as a vaudeville house, the Winter Garden closed in 1928 and sat empty for many years, while the Elgin was used as a movie theatre. They were purchased by the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1981. In 1987-1989 the theatres were subject to a restoration.
