Commissioned to commemorate World Youth Day (WYD) and the visit of Pope John Paul II to Toronto in July 2002. The Inukshuk, constructed of roughly 50 tonnes of mountain rose granite, stands 30 feet high with an arm span of 15 feet. It was made by Inuit artist Kellypalik Qimirpik from Nunavut.

A granite slab near the Inukshuk is inscribed:

World Youth Day has been a true navigational guide for millions of young people throughout the world. The Toronto Inukshuk invites each one of us to become beacons of light and hope, striving for justice and peace in this world. This Toronto Inukshuk Legacy, co-chaired by Mr. Tony Dionisio and Councillor Joe Pantalone, is a reminder of the immense, wonderful gathering of young people and His Holiness Pope John Paul II, held in Toronto during World Youth Day, July 23-28, 2002. Mayor Mel Lastman and Toronto City Council.
