St. Mary's Church was completed in 1889, designed by architect Joseph Connolly in the Gothic Revival style. The spire was added later in 1905, designed by Arthur W. Holmes. The land that the church sits on was originally part of the Garrison Reserve, and was granted to Bishop Macdonnell under the condition that a church be built immediately with free seats for the military. During construction of the first church building, human remains were discovered, as the property had served as an emergency cholera cemetery during the outbreaks of 1832 and 1834 in York. A second church was completed in 1860 on the foundations of the original church, but it was replaced with the current 1889 building as a result of structural problems.
