This grand Annex-hybrid home mixes Queen Anne Revival and, to a lesser extent, Romanesque Revival styles with extensive use of geometric and classical molded terra cotta motifs. It was built in 1891 for prominent Toronto businessman Wilmot Deloui Matthews and was probably designed by the Gooderham family's go-to architect, David Roberts Jr. (Distillery District buildings). George Martell Miller designed a ballroom addition to the house in 1901.
Matthews was a co-founder of the Canada Malting Company and variously director of Hamilton Steel and Iron, Canadian General Electric, Dominion Bank, and CP Railway, as well as president of the Toronto Board of Trade.
