42 Gladstone Avenue is a 2-storey industrial-commercial building located near the southwest corner of Gladstone Avenue and Peel Avenue in the Little Portugal neighbourhood of Toronto. 42 Gladstone Avenue was constructed in 1954/1955 and is in the Streamline Moderne style of architecture. The primary elevation is of a red brick construction presently painted white, whereas the side/rear elevations are of a yellow brick construction.
During the early-to-mid 2010s, Gladstone Avenue between Peel Avenue and Queen Street West was intensively redeveloped with a mixed-use development spanning most of the block (bisected by Minowan Miikan Lane) and known as The Carnaby. 42 Gladstone Avenue and its neighbours to the north were holdout properties. As of early 2023, the Gladstone-Peel intersection is undergoing its first major streetscape redesign since 1949. This will bring renewed interest in the area and increase development pressure on neighbouring sites.
42 Gladstone Avenue was first home to the Beverley Upholstery Company and the Canadian Video Craft Company Ltd.
Later uses of the building include Trimfit of Canada Ltd. (hosiery manufacturers) / Kurly Kate Ltd. (wire pot scourers) c. 1960. Following the emergence of Queen Street West as an arts and design district in the 1970s, 42 Gladstone Avenue was converted for this type of use with occupants including Kroy Screen Studios Ltd. (silk screeners) and Heinz Jordon Ltd. (artist supplies) c. 1975; the Purple Institution (art gallery) c. the late 1980s; and John Tong / +tongtong design c. 2000s to mid-2010s. Tong designed the interior of the nearby Drake Hotel during its renovation in the mid-2000s.
As of 2023, 42 Gladstone Avenue is home to Pavilion — an interior design company that specializes in Canadian designers.
