Presently known as 407-409 Dundas Street West, this house was constructed in 1875. The storefront addition dates to after 1924.
Past addresses of this property include: 25. St. Patrick Street; 69 St. Patrick Street; and 411 Dundas Street West.
This property was one of the very first houses built on this stretch of Dundas Street West (then known as Saint Patrick Street).
407-409 Dundas Street West was originally a semi-detached house, although its western portion was demolished and redeveloped during the 20th century.
The house was first home to Charles Brayley - a clerk and travelling salesman, who lived here with his widowed mother Margaret Brayley between its construction in 1875 and 1881/1882. The Brayleys appear to have later moved to Hamilton.
Following the departure of the Brayleys, the property became home to Charles S. Drummond - a real estate agent - in the mid-1880s.
The South-East Spadina: Official Plan Proposals report issued by the Toronto Planning Board in 1978 also specifically notes how Dundas Street West between Beverley Street and Spadina Avenue was transformed into a commercial district during the emergence of Chinatown West from the 1950s onward. This commercialization of the streetscape saw many of the original 19th century buildings on this stretch demolished and the sites redeveloped (although some had been demolished and/or renovated prior to this point too). This is one of the few surviving 19th century properties on this particular stretch of Dundas Street West.
The property is presently home to The Herb Depot.
