Hillhurst Residence with Four bedrooms Two-car garage and basement is located in one of Toronto's most exclusive neighbourhoods on the former municipal boundaries of Old Toronto and North York.
This neighbourhood is an established old-fashioned residential neighbourhood with a specific traditional character.
The main design challenge of the project was to combine a modern approach with the traditional character of the neighbourhood and be compatible with a limited gross floor area that zoning bylaw allows in the respective designation.
Proposed two double-height spaces (in the basement and main floor ) provide an opportunity to keep the total livable area within zoning limitation & enlarge the building envelope to create the illusion of a bigger house. These void areas not only create visual contact between floor levels but also unite all the activities within an integrated and interconnected living space rather than separated floor levels. Furthermore, the extraordinary huge skylight in the middle of the hallway and above the main floor’s double-height area, centred with the dining room & entrance, brings natural light into the heart of the house.
The contemporary style of the façade combines the traditional pitched roof, masonry materials and massive chimneys with a modern approach of big glazings & different articulations.
The project has been designed in Spring of 2017 & construction was finished in Jan. 2019.
