Notes:

Mount Pleasant Road was opened in 1912. From the mid-1920s to the 1976 Mount Pleasant had a streetcar line that ran from St. Clair station. With the development of the streetcar, Mount Pleasant Road developed into a popular thoroughfare, characterized by “Main Street Row” type of commercial buildings between the first and second World Wars. These main street commercial buildings were defined by their  two-story structure with glazed commercial ground floor, and residential or secondary commercial spaces above and the grouping of buildings to form a continuous streetscape. At its height between the world wars,  Mount Pleasant even had a night streetcar which explains the richness of the storefront retail in this strip between St. Clair Avenue and Eglington Avenue which came to be known as the “Mount Pleasant Village”.

662 Mount Pleasant is located at the corner of Hillsdale Avenue East and Mount Pleasant Road, the south-facing elevation and main façade of the building are clearly visible from a public way. The two-story building is characterized by an inset corner entrance, light brown brick facade, a projecting string course, and a projecting cornice capped by a brick parapet roof. The entrance corner cuts back from the sidewalk and is protected by the overhang of the stringcourse.

Opened in 1989 at 662 Mount Pleasant, Mable’s Fable Bookstore painted the windows and entrance columns and installed colourful striped awnings. The children's bookstore's magical appearance has made it an iconic landmark, and an important part of the character of the Mount Pleasant village.
