Notes:

Bayview Glen was founded in 1962 by Lois Doreen (nee Pearson) Hopkins. The school, originally a nursery school and day camp, was housed in a barn at 411 Lawrence Avenue East. In 1964, Bayview Glen acquired an adjoining property allowing the school to expand to include students from age two to Grade 1.

By the Summer of 1966, the school took over Treehaven Farm under the Bayview Bridge and the farmhouse became the next set of classrooms for the students. The school continued to expand through the 70s until 1980 when Mrs. Hopkins passed away and the L. Doreen Hopkins Foundation took control of overseeing the continuation of our founder’s dream.

In 1985, advocates of the school expressed the necessity for more space for the Upper School students, which led to space being leased from an engineering firm at 275 Duncan Mill Road. In 1989, the property at 411 Lawrence Avenue East was sold and the Lower School moved to the Duncan Mill Campus for the 1990 academic year.

The decade of the 90s was one of progress and growth, with the acquisition of the Upper School campus in 1998. During this time, the student population grew from 243 to approximately 950, ranging from preschool to university entrance.

In September 2000, after various renovations including an addition of a double gymnasium and theatre complex, H.R.H. The Duke of York officially opened the Upper School.

In 2012-2014, Bayview Glen underwent renovations, including the construction of a brand new building that brought the Prep School and Upper School together. The project was completed in September 2013, the architect was MC Architects, and it cost $15,100,000.

The addition and renovation to the Bayview Glen School involved the construction of a three storey Prep School addition to an existing Upper School building.  The addition included a double gymnasium, a 300 seat dining hall, a new library and resource centre, a state of the art fitness room and classrooms, as well as a dedicated music centre for the school.  The existing Upper School was renovated to accommodate additional classrooms and student commons areas.  A sense of community in the school was highlighted through creating a student hub of activity where the new gymnasium, existing auditorium, new dining hall and Library converge around a pedestrian gallery space filled with student activity and a sense of Bayview Glen’s school spirit and identity.

Situated on a dense urban site, the Bayview Glen Prep School Addition provided relief from the hustle and bustle of the site by providing the school with a Roof Terrace used for outdoor classrooms and activities, Green Roof Allotment Gardens, and a Contemplative Garden.  All of these special outdoor spaces are used to encourage student engagement with the environment and raising awareness through their involvement in agricultural tasks. The site also incorporated the use of permeable paving and a bio swale in addressing the sensitivities of the ravine site and the water balance concerns.
