St. Leo Catholic School is slowly approaching its centenary. St. Leo was the only Catholic school in the Mimico Separate School Board when it was founded in 1926. In the original 1926 wing, St. Leo consisted of eight classrooms and an auditorium. This auditorium was used for many Church and community events and was indeed the cultural and entertainment centre for Catholics in Mimico.
The Board’s Capital Development department continues to work on the development of a new school at the site of St. Leo Catholic School to consolidate the student populations of St. Leo and St. Louis Catholic schools. It is being designed by Kohn Shnier Architects The projected occupancy is September 2021.
The Request for Proposal scope of work also includes a full Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) conforming to City of Toronto requirements to determine which elements of the existing 1926 schoolhouse may potentially receive a heritage designation and how these elements can best be incorporated in the design of the new school.
