St. John Vianney Catholic School opened with 175 students to relieve overcrowding at St. Stephen Catholic School in September 1979 in a porta-pack on Thistledown Boulevard. Most classes were combined classes with no special education or English as a Second Language classes. As there was no gymnasium, students were bussed once a week to St. Benedict's for gym during winter. The kindergarten and library were regular sized classrooms.
In September 1984, St. John Vianney moved to the present location which is leased from the Toronto District School Board. The school now has Special Education, English as a Second Language classes, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music and International Language classes (Italian) which are part of the daily curriculum.
A new childcare centre is currently being built.
