McKee Public School was founded in 1927, although the current building dates from 1998. The project brief in 1998 was to develop a school that fit with the low-rise residential neighbourhood and included a unifying green/community area. KPMB positioned the school around a central court using simple circulation systems. This court featured natural light and six structural columns represent 'trees of learning.' The school contained three separate classroom zones: Kindergarten occupies a single-storey wing; Grades 1-2 are housed around the library/resource court on the ground floor; Grades 3-5 centre around the computer lab on the second floor. A later addition was designed by Etude Architects and constructed by Newgen Construction Corporation. This consisted of a 1-storey addition with two classrooms and renovated existing classrooms. New millwork features were installed for both students and staff. The design emphasized natural light and included barrier free design for accessibility. Exterior renovations included landscaping, walkways, and play areas. Extensive population increase in the area in the 21st century has resulted in the use of portables for older students. Some newer condo developments located near the school cannot send their children to the school because of overcrowding. The school is a Platinum Certified Eco-School since 2011.
