This tower formed part of North York's first fire hall at 5125 Yonge Street. The two-bay fire hall was built in 1942 by Murray Brown. As the area's population grew, a third bay was added to the building's left side c. 1952. The fire hall was designed in the Colonial Revival Style with Modern influences.

The fire hall was demolished in 1989. The hose tower was preserved and reconstructed in Princess Park, in front of the Empress Walk development. 

Ivan M. Nelson led North York's fire department after 1935.
