27 Homewood Avenue
Cabbagetown-South St.James Town, Toronto

First Occupant:
Magloire de Laplante

OTHER IDENTIFICATION
Notes:

27 Homewood Avenue was constructed in circa. 1873 and was one of the very first houses constructed on Homewood Avenue.

Homewood Avenue was originally known as Pembroke Street North. The present name - Homewood Avenue - has been used since 1878.

25 Homewood Avenue was first home to Magloire de Laplante (1837-1905) and family. Magloire de Laplante (also spelled Delaplante or de Leplante) was born in St. Pierre in 1837. He was a prominent lumberman who operated lumber businesses and mills in Toronto. De Laplante also constructed numerous homes in Toronto and is the eponym of Laplante Avenue (near Bay Street and College Street). De Laplante was married twice and had 2 sons. The family was Roman Catholic. He died in Toronto in 1905.

Magloire De Laplante is also associated with the cottage at neighbouring 29 Homewood Avenue (1879), which he moved into in 1879. De Laplante's son - Albert de Laplante - also resided at 31 Homewood Avenue during the late 19th century.

It is probable - although further research is required to verify - that De Laplante built 27 and 29 Homewood Avenue.
