BUILDING INFORMATION
Name & Location:
Woodbine Mall
500 Rexdale Boulevard
Toronto
West Humber-Clairville
Year Completed:
1985
OTHER IDENTIFICATION
Alternate Name:
Woodbine Shopping Centre, Fantasy Fair
Notes:
The aesthetic of Woodbine Mall is heavily influenced by the revolutionary design of London's Crystal Palace (1851-1936), a massive plate glass structure built in Hyde Park in the mid-19th century for the city’s Great Exhibition, the first world's fair in history. Its arched glass entrance façades in particular inform the mall’s eastern entrance, vaulted skylights, and glass walls. Another, older imitation of The Crystal Palace in Toronto was equally influenced by these features: the Provincial Agricultural Fair of Canada West's (later renamed the CNE) very own Crystal Palace, which was built just seven years after London’s and burned down in 1906.

Woodbine Mall was designed by the architects Crang and Boake Inc. and completed in 1985. As of September 2022, it’s still in operation, as is its indoor amusement park, Fantasy Fair, whose famous attractions include a multi-storey Ferris wheel, a 1911 merry-go-round designed by Charles I. D. Looff (its original wooden horses were replaced with fibreglass replicas in 1985), nautical-themed spinning cups, a Royal Canadian Airforce ride, retro bumper cars, the Fantasy Fair Express children's train, and a multi-level soft kids play area with slides, netted towers, and ball pits. Its yellow and blue bumper boats were removed some time since the late 1990s.
