20-22 Kensington Avenue, Toronto was constructed in 1890. 


The first occupants were: 

 

20 Kensington Avenue: Robert J. Butler and Samuel Oakley (rear).  

 

Robert J. Butler was the assistant manager of the Standard Manufacturing Company. The Standard Manufacturing Company produced awnings and tents and was based at 99 1/2 King Street West in Toronto. 

 

Samuel Oakley was a stonecutter by trade. 

 

22 Kensington Avenue:  Charles Slemin and David Curtis (rear).

 

Charles Slemin was a senior detective with the Toronto Police. In the late 19th century, he worked on the infamous Clara Ford trial. In 1904, Slemin became the Chief of Police of Brantford and subsequently won the King's Medal in 1912 for his service.

 

Unfortunately no further information is available about David Curtis at present.
