Name & Location
Joseph Walton House
323 Danforth Road
Birchmount Park, Scarborough

First Owner:
Joseph Walton

OTHER IDENTIFICATION
Notes:
Joseph Walton was born in 1804 in Alston, a village in northern England. He arrived with his Methodist family in 1818, one of nine children. The Walton family and descendants were important as one of the first families to settle in Scarborough, arriving just after the Thomson family. The parents established a farm. Many of the sons also set up farms as they became independent. At the time of writing I do not have a definite date of construction of this farmhouse, but would guess it somewhere between 1830-1850. It was located close to the road, as were most early Ontario houses. The farms are long gone, and the road has become a busy commercial thoroughfare. This house has been empty for about 3 years now, but since the 1930’s has had several iterations as restaurants, most recently the J. Walton House tavern. It is listed on the City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Property. Catherine Nasmith, July 2017
