The Dudley/Burns House is well-known as one of the first houses built in Cabbagetown (1869) and as a wonderful example of early Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. It’s often overlooked however as the childhood home of Samuel Beckett, a pioneering architect in Toronto who designed estates for the city’s elites, and, along with his partner Chadwick, was the official architect for Lawrence Park, one of our first planned garden suburbs. Beckett died in action in WWI, leaving behind a massive portfolio of buildings across the city.
