BUILDING INFORMATION
Name & Location:
142-144 Amelia Street
142-144 Amelia Street
Toronto
Cabbagetown-South St.James Town
Year Completed:
1879-1884
OTHER IDENTIFICATION
Notes:

While it seems likely that the architect of this semi-detached house had a certain northern British Isles nation in mind, it's possible that the conspicuous keystone motif was simply a reference to the naturalized Scotch thistles of Ontario. 142-144 Amelia Street was probably built in the late 1870s or early 1880s, which is around the time that several Eurasian thistles were introduced in the province. The home's address seems to have been originally numbered 100-102.
